Role of ADAM9 and miR-126 in the development of abdominal aortic aneurysm

Atherosclerosis Feb 07, 2020

Shen G, Sun Q, Yao Y, et al. - A crucial role of disintegrin and metalloprotease 10 (ADAM10) in abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) development has been demonstrated in researchers' previous study, and they undertook this present study to determine the influences of another ADAM protein (ADMA9) in AAA formation. They used in vitro AAA model and murine AAA model comprising AngII treated human aortic smooth muscle cells and human aortic endothelial cells, respectively, and found that ADAM9 was overexpressed. This implies possible crucial roles of ADAM9 in AAA development. On further inquiry, increased macrophage infiltration resulting from ADAM9-induced inflammation was revealed. Cell apoptosis was also induced by ADAM9. Overall, an association between ADAM9 and AAA formation was evident, affording a strategy to control AAA formation using miR-126, likely via modulation of the expression level of ADAM9.
