Robotic mitral valve replacements with bioprosthetic valves in 52 patients: Experience from a tertiary referral hospital

European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery Apr 07, 2018

Kuo CC, et al. - In view of the increased use of bioprosthetic valves worldwide and patient preference for minimally invasive procedures, researchers sought the safety and feasibility of robotic mitral valve replacements (MVRs) with bioprosthetic valves. For this study, 52 consecutive patients underwent robotic MVRs using the da Vinci Si surgical system, with 5 porcine and 47 bovine valves implanted. There were no cases of operative mortality. No prosthesis degeneration was noted during the mean follow-up of 29 ± 15 months. A significant decrease from 51.4 ± 11.5 mm to 42.6 ± 10.1 mm was noted in the average left atrial dimension. Robotic MVR with bioprosthetic valves thus seemed to be safe, feasible, and reproducible.
