Robotic inguinal vs transabdominal laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair: The RIVAL randomized clinical trial
JAMA May 24, 2020
Prabhu AS, Carbonell A, Hope W, et al. - Researchers investigated postoperative outcomes using the robotic approach to inguinal hernia repair vs traditional laparoscopic inguinal hernia repairs. They conducted a randomized clinical trial including 102 cases with inguinal hernia; 54 cases were randomized to the laparoscopic group and 48 cases to the robotic group. Cases who received robotic inguinal hernia repair did not differ significantly from those who received laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair in terms of 30 day operative outcomes concerning postoperative pain, health-related quality of life, mobility, wound morbidity, or cosmesis. The robotic approach was associated with increased operative time, cost, and surgeon frustration, with no significant ergonomic benefit for surgeons.
