Risk of venous thromboembolism in patients by albuminuria and estimated GFR
American Journal of Kidney Diseases Aug 24, 2017
Massicotte–Azarniouch D et al. – This a population–based cohort study evaluated the combined effect of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and albuminuria on risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). Risk for VTE was increased by albuminuria in patients with normal eGFRs compared with those with lower eGFRs.
Methods
- A total of 694,956 adults in Ontario, Canada was evaluated in the study.
Results
- About 15,180 (2.2%) VTE events occurred in the study.
- The risk of VTE was 61% higher in patients with normal eGFR and heavy albuminuria than those with low eGFR and no albuminuria.
- Irrespective of albuminuria, the risk for VTE was minimally increased in subjects with reduced kidney function.
