Risk of venous thromboembolism in ankylosing spondylitis: A general population-based study
Annals of Rheumatic Diseases Feb 13, 2019
Avina-Zubieta JA, et al. - Using the provincial British Columbia, Canada healthcare database, authors estimated the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) cases. They noted 35 subjects who developed pulmonary embolism (PE) and 47 with deep venous thromboses (DVT) among 7190 subjects affected with AS. They recorded that incidence rates (IRs) of PE, DVT, and overall VTE per 1000 person-years for subjects with AS were 0.79, 1.06, 1.56 in comparison with 0.40, 0.50, 0.77 in the control cohort. They observed the highest risks of PE, DVT, and VTE in the first year of diagnosis with HR of 2.88, 2.20 and 2.10, respectively.
