Risk of suicide and non-fatal self-harm after bariatric surgery: Results from 2 matched cohort studies
The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology Mar 01, 2018
Neovius M, et al. - Authors resolved to scrutinize the risk of suicide and self-harm after bariatric surgery compared with non-surgical obesity treatment. Data shed light on the connection between bariatric surgery with suicide and non-fatal self-harm. Nonetheless, low absolute risks were determined which did not justify a general discouragement of bariatric surgery. A necessity arose for a comprehensive preoperative psychiatric history assessment along with the provision of information about increased risk of self-harm following surgery. Findings also recommended postoperative surveillance with emphasis on mental health.
