Risk of subsequent sepsis within 90 days of a previous hospital stay by type of antibiotic exposure
Clinical Infectious Diseases Nov 13, 2017
Baggs J, et al. - In this study, researchers sought to assess the risk of sepsis within 90 days after discharge from a previous hospital stay by type of antibiotic received during the previous stay. As per findings, patients with exposure to high risk or increased quantities of antibiotics during hospitalization were at an increased risk of sepsis within 90 days of discharge. Given a significant proportion of inpatient antimicrobial use may be unnecessary, this study supported the increased stewardship efforts in hospitals to prevent antimicrobial resistance, CDI and other adverse effects, in addition to reducing unwanted outcomes potentially related to disruption of the microbiota, including sepsis.
