Risk of subsequent sepsis within 90 days after a hospital stay by type of antibiotic exposure

Clinical Infectious Diseases Mar 24, 2018

Baggs J, et al. - Researchers planned this retrospective cohort study to assess the risk of sepsis within 90 days after discharge from a previous hospital stay by type of antibiotic received during the previous stay. In this work, patients with exposure to high-risk antibiotics or increased quantities of antibiotics during hospitalization were observed to be at higher risk of sepsis within 90 days of discharge. This study suggested that increased stewardship efforts in hospitals would not only prevent antimicrobial resistance, Clostridium difficile infection, and other adverse effects, but would also reduce unwanted outcomes potentially related to disruption of the microbiota, including sepsis.
