Risk of stroke subsequent to infective endocarditis: A nationwide study
American Heart Journal Apr 02, 2019
Østergaard L, et al. - In this analysis of patients with infective endocarditis (IE) treated without surgery discharged alive, researchers assessed the risk of stroke post-discharge in IE in patients with stroke vs without stroke during IE admission using multivariable adjusted Cox proportional hazard analysis. Overall 4,284 patients with IE identified from Danish nationwide registries were included, of whom 239 (5.6%) suffered a stroke during IE admission. Within the first year of follow-up, the risk of subsequent stroke was significantly increased among those who suffered a stroke during IE admission vs those who didn’t. Beyond one year of discharge, this risk difference was not seen.
