Risk of stroke and myocardial infarction after sudden sensorineural hearing loss: A meta‐analysis
The Laryngoscope May 13, 2021
Lammers MJW, Young E, Westerberg BD, et al. - Researchers evaluated the risk of developing stroke and myocardial infarction following presentation with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL), via a systematic review and meta‐analysis. All studies examining a link between ISSNHL and stroke and/or myocardial infarction (MI) were identified from Pubmed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Libraries. According to pooled adjusted hazard ratios, there is a 1.42‐fold elevated risk of stroke post-ISSNHL. No link between ISSNHL and MI was revealed based on pooled analyses. Findings indicate that an independent risk for subsequent development of stroke may be conferred by ISSNHL, particularly in a subgroup of elderly patients.
