Risk of seizures and status epilepticus in older patients with liver disease
Epilepsia Jun 09, 2018
Alkhachroum AM, et al. - Experts examined the connection between the risk of seizures and status epilepticus in older patients with liver disease. Using inpatient and outpatient claims, a retrospective cohort study was performed between 2008 and 2015 from a nationally representative 5% sample of Medicare beneficiaries. Cirrhosis was the primary exposure variable and mild, noncirrhotic liver disease was the secondary exposure. Compared to a patient without liver disease, people with liver disease were older and had more seizure risk factors. Findings revealed that an association was found between cirrhosis and status epilepticus. No association between liver disease and seizures was found.
