Risk of repeated admissions for respiratory syncytial virus in a cohort of > 10,000 hospitalized children
Journal of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society Jul 30, 2020
Wong K, et al. - Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) hospitalizations in Alberta, Canada were examined over a 13-year period with an emphasis on the incidence and risk factors for repeat hospitalizations attributable to new RSV infections. They identified 10,212 children with 10,967 RSV admissions using the Alberta Health Services Discharge Abstract Database from July 1, 2004 through June 30, 2017. In children < 5 years of age, RSV hospitalization rate of 1.6% was reported. During the same RSV season, repeat RSV infections requiring readmission was noted following only 0.35% of RSV hospitalizations. Relative to children with no RSV related readmission, those who were readmitted more frequently had congenital heart disease or were diagnosed with RSV pneumonia (vs bronchiolitis or upper respiratory tract infection) during their initial hospitalization.
