Risk of psoriasis according to body mass index: A retrospective cohort analysis
Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology Jun 12, 2021
Norden A, Rekhtman S, Strunk A, et al. - Researchers conducted the study for comparing the incidence of psoriasis among patients stratified by BMI category (normal or underweight, overweight, obese-class 1, obese-class 2/3). Between January 1, 2008, and September 9, 2019, a retrospective cohort analysis of a demographically heterogeneous sample of over 1.5 million patients in the United States was conducted. Psoriasis had a crude incidence of 9.5 per 10,000 person-years in normal or underweight patients, 11.9 in overweight patients, 14.2 in obese class-1 patients, and 17.4 in obese class 2/3 patients. Overweight, obese-class 1, and obese-class 2/3 patients had significantly higher risks of developing psoriasis than patients with a BMI of < 25.0. The BMI has an independent influence on the development of psoriasis. There seems to be a graded relationship between BMI and psoriasis risk.
