Risk of prosthetic joint infection increases following early aseptic revision surgery of total hip and knee arthroplasty
Journal of Arthroplasty Jul 27, 2020
Quinlan ND, Werner BC, Brown TE, et al. - In this study, early aseptic revision surgery as a potential risk factor was investigated for PJI following total hip (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Researchers distinguished individuals who had undergone primary THA or TKA with early aseptic revision in 2 national insurance databases. They distinguished control groups of patients who did not undergo revision and matched in a 10:1 ratio to study patients. A logistic regression analysis was applied to estimate rates of PJI at 1 and 2 years postoperatively following revision surgery and matched with controls. A total of 328 Medicare and 222 Humana patients undergoing aseptic revision THA were included in the study. The results of this study indicate that early aseptic revision surgery following THA and TKA is correlated with significantly elevated risks of subsequent PJI within 2 years.
