Risk of peripheral artery disease according to a healthy lifestyle score: The PREDIMED study
Atherosclerosis Jun 09, 2018
Lopez-Laguna N, et al. - Researchers determined the contribution of lifestyle factors to the development of peripheral artery disease (PAD) in the analysis of the multicenter PREDIMED (PREvención con DIeta MEDiterránea) trial as a prospective cohort study. Participants included 7,073 participants (aged 55–80 years) at elevated risk of cardiovascular disease, with 50% prevalence of type 2 diabetes. The definition of a healthy lifestyle was a 5-point score comprised of adherence to a Mediterranean diet (MedDiet), moderate alcohol intake, regular physical activity, normal weight (BMI < 25) and non-smoking. They found an association of a simple healthy lifestyle score with a substantially reduced risk of PAD in the population studied, with a score combining moderate alcohol consumption, MedDiet, and physical activity or non-smoking having the greatest reduction.
