Risk of osteoporosis and fractures in patients with thyroid cancer: A case-control study in U.S. veterans
The Oncologist Jun 10, 2019
Papaleontiou M, et al. - Using the Veterans Health Administration Corporate Data Warehouse (2004–2013), researchers investigated U.S. veterans with thyroid cancer in this case-control study, to determine osteoporosis and fracture risk among those individuals. This study included 10,370 patients with thyroid cancer and 10,370 controls, matched by age, sex, weight, and steroid use. The osteoporosis and fracture risk was compared between the two groups by using generalized linear mixed-effects regression model. Findings revealed a more common occurrence of osteoporosis, but not fractures, in U.S. veterans with thyroid cancer as compared to controls. Factors that showed relation to osteoporosis included lower thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), female sex, older age, and androgen use, as revealed in subgroup analysis of patients with thyroid cancer. There was no link of serum TSH with fractures.
