Risk of osteoporosis and fracture in victims with burn injury
Osteoporosis International Feb 13, 2019
Kaewboonchoo O, et al. - From the insurance data of Taiwan, researchers analyzed 43,532 cases with a burn injury in 2000–2012 comparatively with a cohort of 174,124 people without such an injury to assess the risk of osteoporosis and fracture in subjects with burn injury. They noticed a higher incidence of osteoporosis in the burn cohort as compared to the comparison cohort especially females. They found that candidates with burns involving 20%–49% of total body surface area and with burns limited to the lower/upper limbs had the greatest incidence rates. An increment in osteoporosis incidence was noted (22.7 per 1,000 person-years) for burn victims with comorbid diabetes. Hence, they suggested prevention intervention among those who had a burn injury to lessen the risk of osteoporosis and fracture.
