Risk of ocular anomalies in children exposed in utero to antimalarials: A systematic literature review

Arthritis Care & Research Dec 12, 2019

Gaffar R, et al. - A total of ten cohort studies and two randomized controlled trials, ranging in size from six to 444 exposed infants studied, and three case reports were searched and collectively, 1,477 infants were studied in order to ascertain whether offspring from mothers with SLE, exposed in utero to antimalarials, had a heightened risk of ocular anomalies during childhood compared with unexposed SLE offspring. The risk of ocular toxicity seemed to be low to nonexistent in children exposed to relevant doses of antimalarials antenatally. Moreover, the potential advantages and risks of antimalarials should be considered in all SLE pregnancies, and high dosages should proceed to be bypassed.
