Risk of mortality in individuals with hip fracture and traumatic brain injury
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Jan 16, 2019
Albrecht JS, et al. – Researchers conducted this nested cohort study involving a national sample of Medicare beneficiaries (2006-2010) to estimate the prevalence of diagnosed traumatic brain injury (TBI) among older patients (aged ≥ 65 years) hospitalized with hip fracture and also to examine its relationship with all-cause mortality. The investigators used International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification codes to define TBI at the time of hip fracture. During the follow-up period, they mainly evaluated all-cause mortality. According to findings, TBI prevalence among individuals with hip fracture was 2.7%. In this patient population, 15/100 person-years was the absolute risk of mortality due to TBI. A greater risk of mortality was observed in relation to TBI among individuals with hip fracture. The researchers advised practitioners to consider screening for the presence of TBI in this vulnerable population.
