Risk of mortality between untreated and treated papillary thyroid cancer: A matched cohort analysis
Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology Nov 08, 2019
Lin JK, Sakoda LC, Darbinian J, et al. - Among 3,679 patients with papillary thyroid cancer (PTC), researchers explored the connection between treatment status and mortality risk. For this investigation, they matched 31 untreated individuals to 155 treated individuals. To estimate all-cause and disease-specific mortality, HRs and 95% CIs were calculated. For untreated vs treated patients, the adjusted HRs for all-cause mortality at 5 and 10 years were 4.2 and 4.1, and for disease-specific mortality, 14.1 and 10.2. For low-risk untreated vs matched treated patients, the adjusted HRs for all-cause mortality was 0.7. Untreated PTC patients were at higher risk of death relative to treated patients, while low-risk untreated PTC patients had a similar rate of metastasis and no increased risk of all-cause mortality.
