Risk of miscarriage in women with chronic diseases in Norway: A registry linkage study
PLoS Medicine May 16, 2021
Magnus MC, Morken NH, Wensaas KA, et al. - This study was undertaken to investigate the risk of miscarriage according to various preexisting chronic diseases. Researchers performed a registry-based study to distinguish registered pregnancies (n = 593,009) in Norway between 2010 and 2016 through 3 national health registries (birth register, general practitioner data, and patient registries). They identified six broad categories of illness, comprising 25 chronic diseases characterized by diagnostic codes used in general practitioner and patient registries. The risk of miscarriage was correlated with conditions related to cardiometabolic health, although the risk of miscarriage was largely unaffected by maternal chronic diseases. As per the data, this finding is consistent with emerging evidence linking cardiovascular risk factors to pregnancy complications.
