Risk of kidney failure in patients with cancer: A South Korean population- based cohort study
American Journal of Kidney Diseases Aug 22, 2021
Kim CS, Kim B, Suh SH, et al. - An elevated risk of kidney failure treated with replacement therapy (KFRT) was found in cancer patients, especially in those suffering from multiple myeloma, after accounting for the competing risk of death.
A retrospective population-based cohort study.
From the Korean National Health Insurance Service database, 2,473,095 participants with (n=824,365) or without (n=1,648,730) cancer were analyzed.
Cancer patients exhibited a higher occurrence of KFRT vs non-cancer controls (incidence rates of 1.07 versus 0.51 cases per 1,000 person-years).
Malignancies most significantly linked with an elevated KFRT risk were multiple myeloma, leukemia, lymphoma, and kidney, ovarian, and liver cancer, with multiple myeloma conferring the highest risk across age and gender groups.
A higher risk of KFRT was observed in all cancer patient subgroups (age, gender, smoking, alcohol, exercise, obesity, and comorbid conditions).
