Risk of ischaemic stroke in patients with migraine: A longitudinal follow-up study using a national sample cohort in South Korea
BMJ Open Apr 06, 2019
Lee SY, et al. - In this study involving migraineurs, researchers studied the risks of different types of stroke. They gathered data from a national cohort between 2002 and 2013 by the South Korea Health Insurance Review and Assessment. Data were extracted from migraine patients (n=41,585) and 1:4 matched controls (n=166,340), which they used to analyze the occurrence of ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes. In the migraine group, they observed higher rates of ischemic stroke vs the control group. The adjusted HR for ischemic stroke was 1.18 in the migraine group. In middle-aged women and older women, the contribution of migraine to the occurrence of ischemic stroke was also observed. Overall, the investigators concluded that migraine was not associated with hemorrhagic stroke but was instead linked to an increased risk of ischemic stroke.
