Risk of incident atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease events by achieved atherogenic lipid levels among 62,428 statin-treated individuals with diabetes mellitus
The American Journal of Cardiology Jun 08, 2018
Rana JS, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study, researchers evaluated if low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) or non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C) goals were relevant for primary prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) in patients with diabetes. Eligible patients were those with type 2 diabetes, age 21-90 years, taking statins, with no history of ASCVD as of January 1, 2006, in Kaiser Permanente Northern California (KPNC), an integrated healthcare delivery system. They found a monotonically lower risk of incident ASCVD events in relation to lower achieved lipid levels in a large cohort of statin-treated diabetes patients without ASCVD. Overall, for ASCVD primary prevention in diabetes patients, the use of LDL-C or non-HDL-C treatment goals was supported.
