Risk of homelessness after discharge from psychiatric wards in Denmark: A nationwide register-based cohort study
Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica Oct 11, 2019
Nilsson SF, Laursen TM, Hjorthøj C, et al. - Researchers conducted this nationwide, register-based, cohort study to investigate the absolute and relative risks of homelessness after discharge from psychiatric wards in Denmark. Between January 1, 2001, and December 31, 2015, they included people (aged 18+ years) discharged from psychiatric wards in Denmark. In total, 126,848 psychiatric in-patients were involved accounting for 94,835 person-years. In men and women, the incidence of homelessness 1 year following discharge was 28.18 and 9.27 per 1,000 person-years at risk, respectively. Investigators found that high-risk period of homelessness was the first year after discharge from psychiatric wards, particularly when having a substance use disorder or a previous history of homeless shelter contact. There is a need for more efforts to prevent homelessness.
