Risk of homelessness after discharge from psychiatric departments in Denmark: A nationwide register-based cohort study
Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica Aug 09, 2019
Nilsson SF, Laursen TM, Hjorthøj C, et al. - In this nationwide, register-based, cohort study, researchers assessed the absolute and relative risks of homelessness after discharge from psychiatric wards in Denmark. Participants were 126,848 psychiatric inpatients (aged 18+ years) discharged from psychiatric wards in Denmark from January 1, 2001 to December 31, 2015. Analysis suggests that in men and women, the incidence of homelessness 1 year following discharge was 28.18 and 9.27 per 1,000 person-years at risk, respectively. Risk of homelessness was high in the first year following discharge from psychiatric wards. This was particularly observed in those with a substance use disorder or a previous history of contact with a homeless shelter. Findings emphasize improving efforts to prevent homelessness.
