Risk of hepatocellular cancer in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
Gastroenterology Aug 29, 2018
Kanwal F, et al. - A retrospective cohort study was conducted from 130 facilities in the Veterans Health Administration to determine the risk of incident hepatocellular cancer (HCC) among patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). For this investigation, patients with NAFLD diagnosed between January 1, 2004 and December 31, 2008 were involved and followed until HCC diagnosis, death or December 31, 2015. Findings revealed that the risk of HCC was higher in NAFLD patients vs those observed in general clinical population. In patients with cirrhosis, most HCC cases in NAFLD developed. It was observed that the absolute risk of HCC was higher than the accepted thresholds for HCC surveillance for most patients with NAFLD cirrhosis.
