Risk of glaucoma surgery after corneal transplant surgery in medicare patients

American Journal of Ophthalmology May 18, 2018

Zheng C, et al. - Researchers compared the rates of glaucoma after different corneal transplant surgeries using glaucoma surgery as a more rigid and specific endpoint. They noted no statistically significant differences among various transplant groups, nonetheless, literature suggested that more angle-altering cornea surgeries confer a higher risk. However, patients with preexisting glaucoma had a higher risk of glaucoma surgery within the same year after corneal transplant surgery, which was especially pronounced in the penetrating keratoplasty (PK) group. When considering long-term effects of corneal transplants, these patients required special care.
