Risk of gastrointestinal cancer in patients with an elevated level of gamma- glutamyltransferase: A nationwide population-based study
PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases Feb 10, 2021
Hong SW, Lee HJ, Han K, et al. - Researchers examined if and how gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) level is associated with risk of gastrointestinal cancer. They also assessed how the interaction of hyperglycemia with increased GGT concentration contributes to the incidence of gastrointestinal malignancy by the stratified analysis. Participants were 8,120,665 Koreans who underwent medical checkups in 2009. Findings revealed an increased risk of gastrointestinal cancer in relation to an elevated level of GGT; this was evident irrespective of cancer site. The type of cancer and glycemic status were factors that impacted the effect a higher GGT level had on gastrointestinal cancer risk. In stratified analysis based on glycemic status, it was revealed that the impact of increased GGT was predominant in the risk of esophageal cancer.
