Risk of gallstones in patients with obstructive sleep apnea: A nationwide observational cohort study
Sleep and Breathing Jul 11, 2018
Chen CH, et al. - Researchers studied the link between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and gallstones by analyzing the incidence of gallstones for a cohort of 3,827 patients aged ≥ 20 years with OSA from the Longitudinal Health Insurance Research Database 2000. These patients were propensity-matched with randomly selected beneficiaries without OSA in a 1:1 ratio according to age, sex, occupation, urbanization, index year, and comorbidities of hypothyroidism, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, liver cirrhosis, alcohol-related illness, hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, obesity, inflammatory bowel disease, stroke, coronary artery disease, hepatitis B virus, and hepatitis C virus. They found a strong association between OSA and gallstones. Based on the findings, they realized that there is a need for further study to assess whether treating OSA can reduce gallstone risk.
