Risk of epithelial ovarian cancer Type I and II after hysterectomy, salpingectomy and tubal ligation: A nationwide case control study
International Journal of Cancer Jun 25, 2021
Darelius A, Kristjansdottir B, Dahm-Kähler P, et al. - This nationwide register-based case-control study was conducted to examine links between hysterectomy, salpingectomy or tubal ligation and risk reduction of Epithelial Ovarian Cancer (EOC) Type I and II. Participants included females diagnosed with EOC, Fallopian tube or primary peritoneal cancer between 2008 and 2014. Based on histology and predefined criteria, cases were grouped into Type I and II. Regression analyses revealed a significantly lower risk of EOC Type II, but not Type I, in relation to having undergone a previous salpingectomy. A decreased risk of both EOC Type I and Type II was observed in relation to hysterectomy. Experts found similar estimates for tubal ligation, although without statistical significance. The observed link between salpingectomy and decreased risk of EOC Type II favors the proposed theory of high grade serous cancer arising from the tubal fimbriae.
