Risk of depression and anxiety in adults with cerebral palsy
JAMA Neurology Jan 04, 2019
Smith KJ, et al. - Researchers used primary care data to determine the risk of depression and anxiety in adults with cerebral palsy (CP) vs an age, sex and practice-matched group of adults without CP. The mean (SD) age of the CP patients and the non-CP adults was 33.3 (15.5) years, and 46.8% were women. They found that adults with CP have a higher risk of depression or anxiety in this cohort study of 1,705 adults with cerebral palsy and a matched group of 5,115 adults without cerebral palsy. In addition, intellectual disability comorbidity is an important effect modifier that should be considered in the examination of the mental health of CP adults, as only patients with cerebral palsy without intellectual disability showed an increased risk of depression and anxiety.
