Risk of dementia in bipolar disorder and the interplay of lithium: A systematic review and meta-analyses
Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica Feb 19, 2020
Velosa J, et al. - Researchers examined how bipolar disorder (BD) affects the rate of dementia and whether the risk of dementia in BD reduces with lithium. In the meta-analysis, they included a total of 10 studies (6,859 BD; 487,966 controls) to test whether BD is a risk factor for dementia and included five studies (6,483 lithium; 43,496 non-lithium) about the potential protective effect of lithium in BD. Outcomes suggest that relative to both the general population or those with major depressive disorder, a higher risk of dementia was evident among individuals with BD. The risk of developing dementia appeared reducing in BD in correlation to receiving lithium.
