Risk of central nervous system defects in offspring of women with and without mental illness

Ayoub A, et al. - Researchers undertook a cohort study to investigate the relationship between maternal mental illness and the risk of having an infant with a central nervous system defect. Women at greater risk of nervous system defects in offspring tended to be diagnosed with multiple mental disorders, have more than one hospitalization for mental disease, or be 17 or older at first hospitalization. They suggested counseling women hospitalized for mental illness at first symptoms to prevent central nervous system defects at pregnancy.
