Risk of cardiovascular disease in women with BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations
Gynecologic Oncology Oct 19, 2018
Powell CB, et al. - Researchers determined the prevalence of cardiovascular disease risk factors and endpoints in 233 women aged ≥ 40 years with BRCA mutations. Study participants were identified in Kaiser Permanente Northern California, completed a questionnaire, and underwent a lipid and fasting glucose panel. Among these women, 214 had undergone risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy (RRSO). The investigators used the Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease (ASCVD) calculator to predict 10-year risk of a cardiovascular event. They observed a higher ASCVD 10-years risk among women who had RRSO at age 50 or older vs women who underwent RRSO at younger ages. The researchers noted, however, that this may have been likely due to the older age of participants at study entry. The ASCVD risks for women with BRCA mutation who had RRSO did not indicate any increased risk in relation to being a BRCA mutation carrier.
