Risk of cardiometabolic disease and all-cause mortality in female survivors of domestic abuse
Journal of the American Heart Association Feb 22, 2020
Chandan JS, Thomas T, Bradbury-Jones C, et al. - In order to gain insight into the links between domestic abuse (DA) against women and subsequent cardiometabolic disease (cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes mellitus) and all-cause mortality, researchers undertook this retrospective cohort study including UK-based primary care patients between January 1, 1995, to December 1, 2017. They matched 18,547 women exposed to DA to 72,231 unexposed women by age and lifestyle factors. Findings revealed that female survivors of DA had an increased risk of subsequent cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and all-cause mortality. However, in this group, no link with the development of hypertension was identified, in agreement with prior literature. Keeping in mind the high prevalence of DA, spreading awareness among clinicians regarding the disproportionally increased risk was advised, and they are encouraged to manage modifiable risk factors actively in this group.
