Risk of bleeding after ultrasound-guided jugular central venous catheter insertion in severely thrombocytopenic oncologic patients
The American Journal of Surgery Jul 01, 2018
AlRstum ZA, et al. - As safe platelet count threshold remains controversial, the frequency and risk factors of bleeding following ultrasound-guided internal jugular (USGIJ) CVC insertion were examined in severely thrombocytopenic cancer patients. Patients with hematologic malignancies and severe thrombocytopenia who underwent USGIJ CVC insertion between 2014 and 2016 were retrospectively studied. Severely thrombocytopenic patients showed a low frequency of minor bleeding after USGIJ insertion. Risk factors for bleeding included lower PLT count, larger CVC caliber, and trend for AML diagnosis. Limiting prophylactic platelet transfusion to patients with identified risk factors may be advised.
