Risk of appendiceal neoplasm in periappendicular abscess in patients treated with interval appendectomy vs follow-up with magnetic resonance imaging: 1-year outcomes of the Peri–Appendicitis Acuta randomized clinical trial
JAMA Mar 27, 2019
Mällinen J, et al. - In this Peri–Appendicitis Acuta randomized clinical trial involving 60 patients (aged 18 to 60 years), researchers compared interval appendectomy and follow-up with magnetic resonance imaging after initial successful nonoperative treatment of periappendicular abscess. Data reported that the neoplasm rate of the whole study population was 20%. In this small study population, the neoplasm rate after periappendicular abscess was high, particularly in patients over 40 years of age. If future studies validate this significant rate of neoplasms after periappendicular abscess, it would argue in this setting for routine interval appendectomy.
