Risk of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and other motor neuron disease among men with benign prostatic hyperplasia: A population-based cohort study
BMJ Open Jul 10, 2019
Sørensen TT, et al. - Via a nationwide, population-based cohort study performed in a Danish population, experts investigated the relationship between benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a common disorder inducing nocturia and sleep disturbance, and risk of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and other motor neuron diseases (MNDs). Linked Danish medical databases were used to recognize all men with a first-time diagnosis of BPH between January 1, 1980 and November 30, 2013 without a prior diagnosis of MND (BPH cohort, n=223,131) and an age-matched general population comparison cohort of men without BPH or MND (n=1,115,642). Two hundred and twenty-seven cases of MND in the BPH cohort and 1,094 MND cases in the comparison cohort were discovered after 34 years of follow-up. BPH was concluded not to be associated with an enhanced risk of ALS and other MND.
