Risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes in Japanese systemic lupus erythematosus patients with prior severe organ manifestations: A single-center retrospective analysis
Lupus Jun 01, 2021
Nakai T, Kitada A, Fukui S, et al. - In prior studies, a correlation of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) with increased incidence of adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs) has been identified. As database studies are the source of most of the data on SLE pregnancies, there is unavailability of details of the pregnancies, and no consensus exists on the risk of APO in patients with prior severe organ manifestations. Researchers herein reviewed data of 32 SLE patients with 34 pregnancies who were followed by rheumatologists and gynecologists throughout pregnancy at their institute. Among these pregnancies, 23 in 22 patients were classified as SLE with prior severe organ manifestation. Outcomes revealed no effect of prior severe organ manifestation on the incidence of overall APO in SLE patients. Although patients with previous severe organ manifestation had increased incidence of serious APOs, there were other risk factors for poor pregnancy outcomes besides prior lupus severity. Hence, patients with prior severe organ manifestation may safely deliver healthy babies under proper management by rheumatologists and gynecologists.
