Toppila-Salmi S, et al. - Using population-based data from Finnish national registers, researchers examined the link between allergic multimorbidity and adult-onset asthma taking into account the number of allergic diseases and the age influence. Participants were adults with recently diagnosed asthma (age range: 30-93) (n=1205), matched for gender, age, and living region with one or two controls (n=2050). Overall, 1118 cases with asthma and 1772 matched controls were studied. Among asthmatics, 50.2%, 39.6%, and 33.8% reported allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis or allergic dermatitis, respectively. These morbidities were reported by 26.1%, 20.0%, and 23.5% of controls, respectively. Findings revealed a positive association of adult-onset asthma with the number of allergic diseases and this link decreases with age.
