Risk of acute mesenteric ischemia in patients with diabetes: A population-based cohort study in Taiwan
Atherosclerosis Jan 27, 2020
Chiu YW, et al. - Researchers used claims data from Taiwan's National Health Insurance program in order to examine if diabetes increases the risk of acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI). In this population-based cohort study, a total of 66,624 diabetic patients were recruited from 1998 to 2009, and a comparison group including 266,496 individually matched people without diabetes was chosen. A higher incidence rate for AMI was noted in the diabetes cohort vs comparison cohort. The adjusted hazard ratio of diabetes was estimated to be 1.32 for AMI, following adjustment for gender, age, comorbidity, and health system utilization. A greater risk of AMI related to diabetes was evident in men vs in women. Overall, patients with diabetes had an increased risk of AMI.
