Risk model for severe postoperative complications after total pancreatectomy based on a nationwide clinical database
British Journal of Surgery Feb 07, 2020
Hashimoto D, Mizuma M, Kumamaru H, et al. - Via performing a retrospective observational study using the Japan Society of Gastroenterological Surgery and Japanese Society of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery database, researchers appraised clinical outcomes following total pancreatectomy. Further, they developed a risk model for severe postoperative complications. For this study, the registry yielded data from a total of 2,167 patients who underwent total pancreatectomy. Observations revealed a postoperative 30-day mortality rate of 1·0% (22 of 2,167 patients) and in-hospital mortality rate of 2·7% (58 of 167); severe complications developed in 6·0% (131 of 2,167). In this risk model, they identified the following factors to be strongly positively associated with outcome: the ASA performance status grade and combined arterial resection. Findings support the possible utility of the risk model for predicting severe complications after total pancreatectomy.
