Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism Jan 14, 2020
Park KH, et al. - Utilizing the Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment Claims Database, researchers conducted this nationwide population-based cohort study to assess the incidence of acromegaly, initially diagnosed from 2010 to 2013, and the risk of comorbidities in East Asia, particularly South Korea. Comorbidities were identified during, before, and 2 years after diagnosis. The study included cases of acromegaly and control (718 and 7,180 respectively). Data reported that acromegaly's mean annual incidence rate was 3.57 cases per million. During the study period, malignancies occurred in 61 patients with acromegaly (8.5%) and the most common malignancy was thyroid cancer. The risk of malignancy in females was more pronounced, with increased risk from the prediagnosis period that sustained until the postdiagnosis period. In patients with acromegaly, diabetes mellitus (DM) and heart failure prevalence increased significantly. DM developed in 51.1% and 57.0% of male and female acromegalic patients, respectively, over the entire period. The risk of mortality in females was higher and statistically significant.
