Risk factors, patterns, and outcomes of late recurrence after liver resection for hepatocellular carcinoma: A multicenter study from China
JAMA Mar 27, 2019
Xu XF, et al. - In this multicenter study of 734 patients, researchers examined the risk factors, patterns, and outcomes of late recurrence after curative liver resection for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) via performing univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses. The study sample consisted of patients from January 2001 to December 2015 undergoing curative liver resection for HCC at 6 hospitals in China. According to findings, sex, cirrhosis, and several aggressive tumor characteristics of the initial HCC were related to late recurrence after HCC resection. Late recurrence patterns suggested that recurrence monitoring should be targeted at the liver after 2 years of surgery. Postoperative surveillance improved the likelihood of potentially curative treatments with improved survival outcomes in late recurrence patients.
