Risk factors of intraoperative dysglycemia in elderly surgical patients
International Journal of Medical Sciences Jun 17, 2019
Knaak C, et al. - Since dysglycemia [defined as at least one intraoperative blood glucose (BG) measurement outside the recommended target range of 80-150 mg/dL] was correlated with adverse outcome including increased morbidity and mortality in surgical patients, researchers identified risk factors contributing to intraoperative dysglycemia to describe potential causes for glycemic derangement during surgery. For this investigation, they examined 87 subjects of ≥ 65 years with tight intraoperative BG measurement every 20 min during elective surgery. According to this subgroup investigation of the BIOCOG study, diabetes and duration of surgery have been confirmed as independent risk factors associated with adverse outcome for intraoperative dysglycemia. Therefore, these patients may require intensified glycemic control. There is a justification for increasing awareness and management of intraoperative dysglycemia.
