Risk factors of fat embolism syndrome after trauma: A nested case-control study using a nationwide trauma registry in Japan
Chest Oct 15, 2020
Kainoh T, Iriyama H, Komori A, et al. - Researchers utilized the the Japan Trauma Data Bank database from 2004 and 2017 in order to determine specific unknown risk factors for fat embolism syndrome (FES) following controlling for basic features and patient’s severity in this nested case-control analysis. This study involved patients encountering FES as well as those without FES as controls applying a propensity score matching. FES existing during a hospital stay was the primary outcome. According to the findings, long bone and open fractures in injuries to the extremities were identified to be related to FES. No link of bone reduction and fixation with FES was evident, but delay time to the operation was shown to be related to FES.
