Risk factors, mortality and acute kidney injury outcomes in cirrhotic patients in the Emergency Department
BMC Nephrology Oct 25, 2018
Lins PRG, et al. - Given that acute kidney injury (AKI) is common in cirrhotic patients and is associated with negative outcomes, researchers assessed the presence of AKI and its progression according to KDIGO criteria in 258 cirrhotic patients admitted to the emergency department of a university hospital from March 2015 to February 2017. They also investigated the link between AKI and hospital mortality. Study findings revealed the necessity of meticulous follow-up of the renal function of patients with hepatic cirrhosis hospitalized in an emergency unit. For these patients, a single measure of creatinine was not enough. Additionally, the researchers observed worse clinical outcomes among patients with acute renal injury and creatinine > 1.5 mg/dL, supporting the call for sub-classification of KDIGO 1 in cirrhotic patients.
