Risk factors for unruptured intracranial aneurysms and subarachnoid hemorrhage in a prospective population-based study
Stroke Oct 04, 2019
Müller TB, et al. - In a large, prospective study of the general population with risk variables gathered prior to unruptured intracranial aneurysm (UIA) or aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) detection, researchers assessed potential risk factors for UIAs and aSAH. The HUNT (The Nord-Trøndelag Health Study) invited all residents ≥ 20 years. The study sample consisted of 89,951 candidates. Using hospital records and the Norwegian Cause of Death Register, cases of UIA and aSAH from 1999 to 2014 were identified. Data reported that UIA detection rate was 8.2 per 100,000 person-years. No connection was observed with systolic blood pressure in contrast to previous studies on risk factors of UIA. However, in the same population, a strong link was noted between systolic blood pressure and aSAH. Both diseases were linked to current smoking and female gender.
