Risk factors for the progression of claudication to chronic limb-threatening ischemia after revascularization

Journal of Vascular Surgery Oct 25, 2020

Kim T, Mohamedali A, Kiwan G, et al. - Researchers conducted a single-center retrospective review of patients undergoing lower extremity revascularization (LER) for claudication in order to determine their long-term outcomes and risk factors linked with progression to chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) after LER. Among 448 patients (503 limbs) treated for claudication, 57 (12.7%) progressed to CLTI. Progression of claudication to CLTI after LER occurred more frequently among patients with symptomatic atherosclerosis in the coronary and cerebrovascular beds. Overall low rate of major amputation was observed in correlation with undergoing initial LER for claudication. However, there was correlation of performing multiple reinterventions for claudication with progression to CLTI.
